„Ich habe unglaublich viel Messing poliert“

Ein Königsgast auf der Dannebrog wie Peter Frithiof Buchbjerg Kroghsbo arbeitet in den königlichen Kabinen und Salons: „Wir machten sauber und bereiteten alles für die Ankunft der Königsfamilie auf der Dannebrog vor. Staub saugen, Staub wischen und Messing putzen.
Es gibt unglaublich viel Messing auf der Dannebrog – vor allem das Geländer einer Treppe, die von den königlichen Kabinen hoch zur Halle und weiter hinauf zum Rauchersalon führt.
Die Treppe wird Höllentreppe genannt.

Wir brauchten anderthalb Wochen, um das Geländer zu polieren.
Vier bis fünf Gasten drei Stunden am Tag. Das entspricht grob gerechnet 140 Stunden.
Wenn die Treppe blank poliert ist, sieht man den kleinsten Fingerabdruck – den man dann wieder wegpolieren kann. Davon bekommt man Hornhaut an den Fingern, selbst wenn man Handschuhe trägt.
So wie das Schiff sollte auch die Paradeuniform gut aussehen – meine war oft frisch gebügelt, wenn die Königsfamilie an Bord kam.“

‘I polished an unbelievable amount of brass.’

Conscripts onboard the Dannebrog, such as Kroghsbo, work in the royal cabins and salons: ‘We would make the place clean and tidy before the royals came on board. Vacuuming, dusting and polishing the brass.
There is an unbelievable amount of brass on the Dannebrog – especially the banister on the sweeping stair leading from the royal cabins to the hall and on to the smoking room.
The stair is known as the “Stair from Hell”.
We spent a week and a half polishing the banister.
Four to five sailors, three hours a day. That is roughly 140 hours.
Once the banister is polished to a perfect shine, you can see even the tiniest smudge from a finger – and then you can get right back to work. That will give you calluses, even though you are wearing gloves.
Just as the ship had to look presentable, so too, should the parade uniform – mine was often freshly pressed when the royal family came on board.’
