Kirsten Munk’s prayerbook, written by herself. On the first page the date, 22nd Sept 1617, was written by the King. The figures monograms in enamel on the cover stands for C(hristian) IV (3. 4.) and K(irsten) M(unk) (10. 12.).

Kirsten Munk, 1623

Portrait of Kirsten Munk. Gouache, that is, a special water colour technique. Painted by Jacob van Doordt, 1623, as a sketch for a parade portrait, which is now lost.

Leonora Christina, 1650

Leonora Christina, Countess of Schleswig and Holstein. She was a daughter of Christian IV and the wife of Count Corfitz Ulfeld, the Seneschal. Copy from the 19th century.

Ellen Marsvin, 1648

Ellen Marsvin, Kirsten Munk’s mother. Half-length, painted by Karel van Mander. The painting is dated 1648, the year before Ellen Marsvin died.

Kirsten Munk

In 1615 Kirsten Munk became the second wife of Christian IV. She was the daughter of Ludvig Munk and Ellen Marsvin. She and the King had twelve children, of which eight survived.

1600-1625

The first decades of the 17th century was a great period for the entrepreneurial and ambitious Christian IV. An economic depression was on its way, but its full force had not yet been felt.
