Landgrave Carl of Hesse
Portrait of Landgrave Carl of Hesse. The relief is made in crystal, onyx, cornelian and other minerals, on a base of agate. The Landgrave was the brother of Queen Charlotte Amalie, the wife of Christian V, and it shows Carl as the supreme commander, despite the absence of a command rod, along with tha Hessenian lion gazing at him. The technique of the relief is similar to a puzzle, inlaid with various semiprecious stones.
This particular relief was presumably made in memory his victory against an assaulting french army at Rheinfels in 1672.
