His Majesty the King’s Reference Library
His Majesty the King’s Reference Library is accessible in two ways: On weekends and during Danish school holidays, the library’s beautiful Study Room is open to all visitors at the Amalienborg Museum. The Study Room houses our collection of rare books, most of which date from 1500-1800. Here you will also find small, rotating exhibitions of beautifully illustrated books, atlases, or drawings from the Reference Library’s shelves and drawers.
On weekdays, the Reference Library functions as a working research library, and visits are only possible by prior arrangement. The library is a non-circulating library, meaning that books, maps, and other materials cannot be borrowed but must be examined on-site. Access is limited to researchers and others with specific interests. Requests specifying what one wishes to see and for what purpose should be directed to haandbiblioteket@kosa.dk, after which an appointment can be scheduled.
Please note that the Reference Library is under video surveillance and that areas without public access are alarmed.
Parts of His Majesty the King’s Reference Library can be viewed without prior arrangement at other locations: The so-called “Gothic Library” at Amalienborg and the King’s Reference Library’s rooms at Christiansborg Castle, which form part of the Royal Reception Rooms. The books on the shelves in the rooms of the Amalienborg Museum are also part of the Reference Library.
