Railway carriage in silver
Crown Prince Frederik (IX) was given this cigarette case as a present on his marriage to Princess Ingrid in 1935. It was made by the Royal Jeweller A. Michelsen.
The railway carriage was a fitting gift in more ways than one. Partly it was practical, as the Crown Prince smoked many cigarettes, but above all he had been fascinated by trains since childhood. Frederik IX knew all the train times in Denmark by heart, and he had a full overview of the ferry services too. He subscribed to magazines about trains and ferries and knew all about the various models and makes.
