Princess Thyra, 1857
Christian IX and Queen Louise’s youngest daughter Princess Thyra as a four-year-old, portrayed by August Schiøtt in 1857.
Princess Thyra (1853-1933) is said to have had a milder temperament than her sisters, and Christian IX later spoke of her as his “good daughter”. She received the title of Duchess of Cumberland when she in 1878 married Duke Ernst August, the former Crown Prince of Hanover. Hanover had been annexed by Prussia in 1866, and the couple therefore settled in Gmunden in Austria, where Thyra lived in the large Castle Cumberland, which was the Hanoverian family seat, for the rest of her life. The ducal couple had six children.
