Princess Thyra, 1857
On the wall behind the sofa in Queen Louise’s Salon is, among the many portraits, a large painting of the queen’s youngest daughter, Princess Thyra, painted by August Schiøtt in 1857.
August Schiøtt (1823-1895) was one of the most popular portrait painters of his time. The aristocracy and the bourgeoisie preferred him to others because of his technical abilities and talent for portraying the sitter advantageously. He understood how to stage the sitter in a fitting and comely way, and how to smooth away less favourable features.
