Prince Vilhelm, 1853
Christian IX and Queen Louise’s middle son, Prince Vilhelm (later George I of Greece), portrayed by August Schiøtt in 1853, when the prince was eight years old.
As the Greek king was deposed in a military revolt in 1862, the major European powers had to find a suitable candidate to take over. The next-eldest son of the Danish Crown Couple was found suitable, and Prince Vilhelm was therefore able, in March 1863, to ascend the Greek throne as King George I. In 1867 he married Grand Duchess Olga, who was the niece of Czar Alexander II. The couple had, as far as in known, a happy marriage and had eight children.
